AXS-200 Expanded by EXFO
EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering has launched software suite that brings powerful capabilities to the AXS-200/850 - a handheld Ethernet and IP tester that dramatically simplifies the testing processes used by field technicians when turning-up metro Ethernet and IP services. Available as a software option for existing or new AXS-200/850 testers, the new features allow field technicians to perform one-step, multi-stream traffic generation and monitoring to emulate tiered-service offerings and establish base-line quality-of-service (QoS) metrics that are critical to any service level agreement (SLA).
The continuing popularity of bandwidth-intensive residential triple-play, mobile data, and IP-based business services is driving the proliferation of carrier Ethernet in access and metro networks. As these services have evolved, the need for more stringent SLA metrics and tiered-service offerings have risen, in turn requiring stronger testing capabilities by front-line field technicians. Novice and expert technicians alike must not only turn up and test these new Ethernet connections, but they are also being called upon to monitor and measure QoS performance to quickly and efficiently establish baseline metrics for SLAs.
EXFO's AXS-200/850 handheld tester puts powerful, yet intuitive multi-stream traffic generation and monitoring tools into the hands of field technicians. A quick glance at the AXS-200/850's exclusive graphical multi-stream traffic generation gauges allows any technician to immediately and accurately interpret real-time pass/fail thresholds. The innovative GUI uses speedometer-like images to display real-time test results that eliminate errors in data interpretation with clear, easily recognizable color-coded graphics. Full-line rate throughput, packet jitter, real-time latency, frame loss, out-of-sequence statistics and on-the-fly adjustment of throughput and frame size give all technicians the power to quickly and easily determine if the Ethernet and IP services are meeting expected SLAs.
"Even as networks and component configurations continue to grow in complexity, the current economic climate is forcing service providers to drive more productivity out of their resources," said Etienne Gagnon, EXFO's Vice-President of Product Management and Marketing. "The latest AXS-200/850 software suite supports our customers' business initiatives with focused functionality that expands their field-testing capabilities, while enabling them to meet stringent SLAs. It is another example of EXFO's commitment to deliver innovative, relevant testing solutions that address real-world challenges."

WDSGlobal Launches Live Device Analysis
WDSGlobal, has released Live Device Analysis, a new product designed to help mobile network operators better understand the capabilities and profitability of devices attached to their networks.
Tracking device capabilities, features and standards within a network and measuring profitability and cost-to-support across device models and brands, Live Device Analysis allows an operator to support critical investment and planning decisions with analysis of the actual devices attached to its network. From evaluating an addressable market for a new service to qualifying investment decisions in retail strategy and customer care, Live Device Analysis is the industry's first solution to accurately analyze the composition of an installed base of devices and allow data to be quickly published across departments.
"Decisions in network infrastructure, handset ranging, service deployment, customer care and marketing require a detailed understanding of the device technologies and standards present on the network," explains David Ffoulkes-Jones, WDSGlobal's CEO. "Today's CRM and analysis tools can only go so far in delivering the necessary intelligence. WDSGlobal believes that Live Device Analysis represents a fundamental shift in the way that network operators will extract intelligence and business advantage from their installed base of mobile devices."
Extracting and analyzing this type of device intelligence from a network has traditionally been challenging. Data often resides in disparate engineering systems across a network operator's business and its accuracy can be compromised by increased device diversity, churn, multiple device ownership and the use of grey market devices.
Live Device Analysis is the industry's first solution to turn this raw data into actionable intelligence for use across operational departments such as marketing, retail, product management, customer care and finance.
"Using Live Device Analysis, a marketing team can quickly segment a subscriber base not just on the traditional demographics but also on the capabilities of their mobile devices. That sort of analysis is vital in launching new services and running highly targeted promotions. Similarly, device profitability or cost-to-support can quickly be correlated to device features, allowing more qualified handset ranging and customer care decisions to be made," adds Ffoulkes-Jones.

Spirent Launches HyperMetrics
Spirent Communications plc , has launched the HyperMetrics(TM) family of modules on the Spirent TestCenter platform. HyperMetrics has a multi-core architecture that addresses port density as well as the critical aspect of realism required to ensure Quality of Experience (QoE) for new services helping to maximize return on investment (ROI) and total cost of ownership (TCO) throughout the test lifecycle.
"With the evolution to intelligent content aware networks, service providers and network equipment manufacturers need to furnish tools and functions to plan, measure, monitor, and assure evolving traffic patterns, new services, and optimized application performance," said Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. "This is not an easy task -- it means that increasing port density or adding new protocols is necessary but clearly not sufficient for test engineers. What's required are realistic network environments representing the end-to-end complex conditions of next-gen IP networks including aspects such as scalability and performance."
Traditionally, test solutions focused on a single dimension of either port density or Layer 2-3 network emulation or Layer 4-7 application performance. As a result, the customer's initial investment was limited only to a specific test in the development cycle. As network elements and services become more sophisticated, they require testing beyond Layer 2-3 considerations of throughput, latency and loss to include QoE measurements (Layer 4-7).
HyperMetrics' high density, multi-core architecture delivers enhanced realism with scalability and performance along with the capability to reallocate processing power to conduct complex yet realistic testing. The emphasis on performance and application realism rather than just port density enables test engineers to invest in a single solution for all their testing needs ultimately reducing capital expenses, while staying within limited operational budgets.
"As the testing standard for tomorrow's networks, Spirent TestCenter HyperMetrics goes beyond advanced functionality to include investment protection," said Tim Jefferson, general manager, Converged Core Solutions group at Spirent Communications. "In this tough economic environment our customers require a solution that allows them to test to new levels of enhanced realism with scalability and performance."
The Spirent TestCenter HyperMetrics modules are designed to offer network equipment manufacturers and service providers a robust and scalable test platform with a flexible user experience for conducting end-to-end Layer 2-7 multi-play testing at gigabit or 10gigabit line rates. The modules, available in a variety of port densities, include the HyperMetrics Converged (CV), HyperMetrics Converged Multi-play (CM) and HyperMetrics Application Performance (AP) modules.

Integra Selects Tollgrade for Broadband Assurance
Integra Telecom Inc., a facilities-based, integrated communications carrier for business, has selected Tollgrade Communications' (NASDAQ:TLGD) broadband service assurance probe -- DigiTest(R) ICE(TM) -- for deployment in a system wide test initiative to further improve performance delivery for Integra's services. A first release of DigiTest ICE became generally available in the U.S. market earlier this summer.
DigiTest ICE is Tollgrade's latest generation broadband service assurance test probe, which has been size and cost reduced to address the requirements of both Central Office-based services and next generation IP network remote cabinets. This solution is uniquely designed for installation at the remote FTTN site -- inside the cabinet -- placing it closer to the customer where it is able to segment faults between the access network and customer and visibility of the customer experience.
The compact ICE test probe is managed by Tollgrade's LoopCare(TM) Test OSS, a key software component of this deployment. It is designed to support a full suite of physical layer measurements and prequalification tests for ADSL and ADSL2+ service delivery.
"As Integra continues to grow, we are constantly striving to maintain our high standards of quality customer service and reliability across our entire system," said Steven Fisher, Integra's Vice President of Operations. "Upon completion, this test system will further ensure the service reliability of our entire network, a key metric of our customer service programs," he added.
"We worked closely with Integra to identify the right testing solution for its expanding footprint and service offerings," said Paul Lloyd, Tollgrade's Director of Product Management. "DigiTest ICE and LoopCare will provide the capability of identifying, validating and locating trouble sources in the customer's current and next generation telco networks, therefore reducing unnecessary service dispatches," he added.
This test system deployment initiative is expected to be completed before the end of 2008.

Siemens Certification at Microsemi
Siemens Communications, Inc.'s HiPath(R) Wireless 802.11n and Outdoor Access Points have been certified at Microsemi Corporation's PowerDsine(R) testing facility as the first 802.11n or Outdoor access points available today that are able to operate at the low power ratings specified in IEEE 802.3af standards for Power over Ethernet (PoE).
Microsemi, whose PowerDsine technology pioneered Power over Ethernet, conducts comprehensive testing of PoE end devices to assure successful installation of PowerDsine Midspan systems using certified devices. Siemens' 802.11n APs and Outdoor Access Points were the first to meet the requirements for PowerDsine Certification at the low power specified in 802.3af PoE standards for such deployments.
Siemens created HiPath(R) Wireless 802.11n APs to plug into existing PoE-enabled Ethernet ports. This allows enterprises to enjoy dual-band 3x3 MIMO and 802.11n high performance while offering the opportunity to save on deployment costs, thereby helping to increase their return on investment from network infrastructures built for the 802.3af PoE standard.
"To qualify for PowerDsine certification, we put PoE end devices through long and exhaustive testing," said Steve Litchfield, Microsemi Executive Vice President and President of Analog Mixed Signal Group. "It is a noteworthy achievement for Siemens to handle 802.11n requirements within the maximum 12.95 watts allowed by IEEE 802.3af."

Tektronix In IZT Win
Tektronix, Inc., a provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced that the Innovationszentrum fur Telekommunikationstechnik GmbH (IZT), a German manufacturer of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) technologies, has selected its DSA70000 and DPO7000 high-performance Digital Phosphor Oscilloscopes (DPOs) and P7313 Z-Active(TM) probes for testing advanced telecommunications systems that employ high-speed serial buses.
Equipment operating at multi-Gbps data rates, now widely used in the mobile, broadcasting and satellite communications sectors, are increasingly making use of high-speed serial buses based on standards including Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA). Testing these systems requires very high-performance measurement instruments. IZT has invested in a range of Tektronix oscilloscopes to conduct projects in the high frequency RF domain, developing demodulators and filters using FPGAs up to 3Gbps, and also to develop communications and broadcast equipment, satellite receivers and DAB transmitters.
"There are very few test and measurement suppliers who produce instruments that can meet our exacting requirements -- from SATA (3Gbps and 6Gbps) and DDR timing measurements to general purpose lab measurements," said Andreas Klose, Group Leader, Firmware Development Group, IZT. "We selected the Tektronix products for their powerful triggering capabilities, unique DPX technology, large display, general ease of use, and the probing system, which uses solder-in tips and digital signal processing. Overall, we found the Tektronix offerings provide the best available signal integrity for our demanding applications."
The products purchased by IZT are the DSA71254 12.5 GHz Digital Serial Analyser (DSA), P7313 Z-Active(TM) low-load probes and the 2.5 GHz DPO7254 Oscilloscope. The higher-speed instrument is used for measurements on high-speed serial data transmission at over 3 Gbit/s, speeds at which signal integrity can be compromised within very short distances on a backplane or circuit board. The DPO7254 is typically used to test circuits including field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and DDR (double data rate) memory devices.

Tektronix In VESA Compliance
Tektronix, Inc. a leading, worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced that the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has approved the Tektronix solution for testing DisplayPort interconnect cables as documented in a Methods of Implementation (MOI) -- the first MOI in the industry for DisplayPort 1.1 cable testing. The Tektronix methodology eliminates the need for expensive and complicated instruments promoted by alternative solutions. The new MOI and complete Tektronix DisplayPort test offering can be viewed at http://www.tek.com/displayport.
DisplayPort is the new digital display interface technology for computers, monitors and home-theater systems aimed at lower implementation costs and improved video performance. DisplayPort gives manufacturers of LCD panels, monitors, graphics cards, PC chipsets, projectors, peripherals, components, cables, and consumer electronics a next generation digital interface that is designed to replace LVDS, DVI, and eventually VGA.
The Tektronix interconnect MOI specifies a DSA8200 Digital Serial Analyzer and TDR/TDT and S-Parameter support through iConnect(R) software. This is the only approved single instrument DisplayPort interconnect test solution in the market for passive cables. Testing active cables additionally requires an AWG7102 Arbitrary Waveform Generator and 80SJNB jitter analysis software. Unlike alternative solutions that require expensive, complex instruments and setups the Tektronix configurations efficiently ensure a readable signal reaches the receiver.
"The Tektronix approach successfully performed the needed DisplayPort cable tests," said Doron Lapidot, director of engineering, Circuit & Design Asia Pacific and EMEA, Tyco Electronics. "The Tektronix solution provides the needed compliance testing with reduced cost and complexity. We've selected this option as part of our DisplayPort interconnect testing procedures."
"The DSA8200 measurement system provides channel characterization with TDR/TDT and S-Parameter support," said Ian Valentine, general manager, Technology Solutions Group, Tektronix. "The acceptance of our DisplayPort cable test solution for interconnect testing by VESA and adoption by forward-looking organizations like Tyco Electronics demonstrate the utility and cost-effective advantages of the Tektronix tools and methodology."
Tektronix has received VESA certification for source, cable, and sink compliance test solutions. "Tektronix is recognized around the world for its leadership in test solutions including DisplayPort," said Bill Lempesis, executive director, VESA.
