Proxy Sniffer
Perform professional load tests and obtain a wide range of informative diagrams and statistics about the response time behavior, the throughput, and the stability of your web application.
The provider is David Fischer GmbH
Features:
Universal HTTP/S Proxy-Recorder
The universal proxy-recorder supports to record web surfing sessions with any web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari ...). Also Ajax calls as well as XML/SOAP messages can be recorded.
High-Performance GUI
Recorded web surfing sessions can be functionally enhanced using the GUI with a few mouse clicks. Additional requirements, such as logons with individual user accounts, or the handling of dynamically-exchanged session parameters, can be efficiently implemented in a short time.
Unlimited Scalability - Simulating Thousands of Users
Depending on the test scenario, hundreds of web users can already be simulated by only one load-releasing computer. The scalable architecture of the product supports additionally an unlimited load generation with thousands of users by a simple combination of several Windows and/or Unix systems to a homogeneous, load-releasing cluster.
Realistic Test Scenarios
Several load tests can be run simultaneously. Multiple client IP addresses can be configured for each load-releasing system, allowing a web application cluster with a load balancer to be stressed in a realistic way. The network bandwidth for each simulated user can be reduced in order to simulate slow access connections.
Support for all Current Authentication Methods
Proxy Sniffer supports logging in to web applications with HTML form parameters as well as with HTTP basic authentication (username/password pop-up window), NTLM authentication (Windows domain accounts) and X509 client certificates (PKCS#12). Each simulated user can be allocated an individual login account.
Real Emulation of Web Surfing Sessions
Together with the automatic support of session cookies Proxy Sniffer offers also to handle dynamically exchanged session parameters efficiently: e.g. hidden form parameter, .NET VIEWSTATE parameter und J2EE URL rewriting parameter.
Automatic Protection from "false positive" Measurement Results
During a load test, Proxy Sniffer compares the content of the received response with the content of the originally recorded response using a unique heuristic algorithm. This powerful feature allows the detection of errors at the application level (malformed web pages) - even when a web page with a correct HTTP response code is returned. This protection against "false positive" measurement results is automatically provided in each load test.
Real-Time Statistics and Real-Time Error Analysis
During a load test, an overview of the measured response times for all web pages and their URLs is displayed in real-time, in addition to the display of the current activity of all simulated users and all errors which have occurred. Furthermore, all error details can be shown and analyzed in real-time during a running load test.
Detailed Measurement Results
After the end of every test, there are up to 18 different diagrams and statistics available. From these results, a complete formatted test report can be created as a PDF document. Results of different test runs can be compared to each other, allowing the efficacy of tuning measures to be evaluated, and to visualize the response time behavior of the web application under different load conditions.
Support for Windows and Unix-Like Operating Systems
Proxy Sniffer can be deployed on Windows XP/2003/Vista systems as well as on all Unix-like systems such as Solaris, Linux, BSD and Mac OS

LoadRunner Add-In From J9
J9 Technologies Inc. today announced a new solution in its JDBC Protocol Add-in product line, enabling customers to extend the capabilities of HP LoadRunner, to stress and isolate problems in the backend data tier and deploy new applications with confidence. J9 is a member of the HP Quality Management Ecosystem, which provides alliance members the ability to develop test accelerators for HP Quality Center and HP Performance Center to support additional platforms, applications and environments.
The JDBC Protocol Add-in leverages HP LoadRunner technology, capturing all SQL traffic going from a Java application to the backend database and playing it back to directly exercise the data tier for high concurrency testing. This helps QA teams apply a measurable and repeatable load to the database and expose potential performance problems early in the development cycle. The auto-generation of database testing scripts replaces the need for writing complex Java code and frees up QA resources for other QA activities.
The JDBC Protocol Add-in from J9 Technologies is fully tested with the full suite of HP LoadRunner solutions, and can easily be used alongside all other HP LoadRunner protocols to create a more realistic and comprehensive load test.
"For the last 6 years, J9 Technologies has been working closely with HP to ensure that customers get more out of their HP LoadRunner and HP Performance Center investments," said Clay Roach, President and CEO for J9 Technologies. "We are very excited about this latest addition in our new line of JDBC Protocol Add-ins and the value it will deliver to our mutual customers for simplifying their JDBC testing efforts. The JDBC Protocol Add-in can help reduce testing cycles dramatically and enable QA, Dev and DBA teams to collaborate on fine-tuning database testing."
"HP is committed to helping our customers rapidly deliver critical business applications that function and perform according to the needs of the business," said Erez Barak, director of product marketing, Software, HP. "HP's collaboration with J9 helps our customers increase efficiency by streamlining the complex process of database testing."

Hammerhead 2
Hammerhead 2 is a stress testing tool designed to test out your web server and web site. It can initiate multiple connections from IP aliases and simulated numerous (256+) users at any given time. The rate at which Hammerhead 2 attempts to pound your site is fully configurable, there are numerous other options for trying to create problems with a web site (so you can fix them). It can be used to test the behaviour of the port under load, or the ability of the port to service a set of requests. Warning: Hammerhead can destroy a web site very quickly (and cost you lots of money if you pay for traffic you generate). It should only be used to generate heavy loads on local web sites for testing purposes.

Tekmark Global Solutions
Tekmark(R) Global Solutions LLC, has seen its TekSecure Labs(R) division, a provider of network IT managed security services and the Tek+Detect(SM) offering, has successfully completed the rigorous annual PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) Approved Scanning Vendors (ASV) testing process and has been recertified by the Council.
This certification complements TekSecure Lab's Tek+Store(SM) offering that monitors and manages security devices. To maintain an unbiased and independent evaluation, the ASV security assessments are performed by the professional services team of TekSecure Labs whereas the management and monitoring of security devices is performed by the operations team. This certification, along with capabilities in circuit procurement, circuit provisioning, wiring and bill consolidation services, positions TekSecure Labs as a single solution provider, thereby meeting a wide range of its clients' needs.
The PCI Data Security Standard (DSS), endorsed by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide and Visa Inc., requires merchants and service providers that store, process or transmit cardholder data, to adopt information security controls and processes to ensure cardholder data protection. A key component of the PCI DSS is the requirement for organizations to have quarterly, external vulnerability scans performed by an ASV qualified by the PCI SSC. TekSecure Labs is such a qualified ASV and performs external vulnerability scans on a regular basis for numerous merchants and service providers.
Jeremiah Sahlberg, Director of Security Services for TekSecure Labs stated, "We are pleased to continue offering PCI ASV scanning services to our clients, helping them to maintain a secure network and meet the evolving PCI compliance requirements."
TekSecure Labs has again achieved approved status by subjecting its Tek+Detect methodology to rigorous testing on the Council's infrastructure, which simulates the network of a typical customer. In an era of increasingly sophisticated attacks on systems, the PCI DSS annual ASV qualification reassures merchants and service providers that they are being assessed accurately and fairly against the most current payment industry requirements. Additionally, the vendors approved by the PCI Security Standards Council are the only entities qualified to perform PCI DSS external vulnerability scans.
"The PCI Security Standards Council has developed clear guidelines to ensure that scanning vendors are up to date and providing the latest in cardholder data security protection," said Bob Russo, General Manager, PCI Security Standards Council. "By participating in the annual ASV certification process and maintaining their certification, TekSecure Labs demonstrates they are playing an active part in this important end goal."
"Our PCI recertification demonstrates continued commitment to provide our customers with a comprehensive and compliant Tek+Detect and Tek+Store retail/Point-of-Sale solutions that address the ever evolving security threats in today's complex IT environment," added Mike Yager, Managing Director, TekSecure Labs.

Advantest Test Handler
Advantest Corporation , the world's leading supplier of semiconductor test equipment, today announced its new M7522 dynamic test handler. The unit offers the industry's highest processing speed and positioning accuracy for fine-pitch tape automated bonding (TAB) and chip-on-film (COF) package devices used in liquid crystal display (LCD) panel ICs. The M7522 dynamic test handler will be available from August 2008 and, alongside the T6373 LCD driver test system, will be displayed as part of the company's LCD Driver IC Test Solution at the "Advantest Tour de Force 2008" exhibition to be held at the Tokyo International Forum, June 3-5.
Rising demand and increased competition in the LCD market
Advancements in technology and changes in semiconductor industry business models are contributing to the continuing fall in price of LCD panels used in flat-screen televisions and computer monitors. Conversely, increasing demand for higher-definition capabilities is driving the need for higher-pin-count devices, which are more costly to produce. With the LCD market expected to expand in the coming years, not only in industrialized countries, but also in developing nations, it is predicted that growth in the flat-panel television market will be particularly strong, with demand surpassing 100 million units in 2009 and 150 million units in 2012. Because of this, worldwide shipments of the driver ICs that these LCD panels rely on are also expected to increase. However, as demonstrated by the drop in price of flat-screen televisions, competition between manufacturers has become increasingly fierce, making yield improvement and test processing speed major issues for high-volume manufacturers of LCD driver ICs. With its enhanced handling capabilities, Advantest's M7522 dynamic test handler addresses such issues.

Gomez Updates Reality Load XF
Gomez, Inc., a provider of web experience management services, today introduced an updated version of its self-service load testing solution, Reality Load XF. Part of the Gomez(R) ExperienceFirst(SM) platform, Reality Load XF combines traditional high volume web application load testing with broad geographic end-user experience testing, generating real-world, browser-driven traffic from a global network of over 40,000 locations. An on-demand, software-as-a-service solution, Reality Load XF addresses the performance challenges of today's composite and browser-based rich Internet technologies, such as Ajax, and extends beyond traditional load testing services to reveal the impact of load on the end-user's experience.
"Businesses today are challenged to deliver increasingly complex applications and struggle to use best practice approaches to load test across all application and infrastructure changes," said Gartner, Inc. analyst Thomas E. Murphy. "Solutions that are flexible and provide a more realistic and cost-effective analysis of the end-user's actual web experience will be a valuable addition to current approaches."
For quality assurance teams, Reality Load XF augments existing internal load testing with the end-user perspective, helping to determine system capacity and address end-user experience issues before launching or changing web applications, or investing in infrastructure upgrades or third party services such as content delivery networks. For IT operations, Reality Load XF helps to quickly identify weaknesses or break points in end-user experience under real-world load conditions prior to seasonal promotions, new product introductions, or entry into new markets. Most tests can be up and running after an hour and users can view the results live in near real-time.
"At EveryScape, delivering a quality online experience is a must in our market today," said Mok Oh, founder & CTO of EveryScape, Inc., which provides an interactive visual platform for local search by creating virtual experiences of metropolitan, suburban and rural areas. "Even in the current Internet age, risk is always introduced whenever we make changes to our product or infrastructure, or are in situations where increased traffic is expected. Being able to use Reality Load XF on-demand whenever we feel the need to assess the potential impact on our users' experiences has been a great confidence booster."
"Today's composite web applications are assembled in the end-user's browser. So many elements -- from browser, platform and device type, to third party content, connection speed and ISP -- can affect performance," said Imad Mouline, Gomez's chief technology officer. "Reality Load XF provides e-commerce, IT and quality assurance teams with confidence when deploying applications and infrastructure."

LogicVision Dragonfly Test Platform Launched
LogicVision, Inc. (NASDAQ:LGVN) , a provider of semiconductor built-in-self-test (BIST) and diagnostic solutions, today announced that it is introducing Dragonfly Test Platform(TM), the next generation of its test and diagnostic solutions. The new platform represents LogicVision's most advanced and comprehensive product portfolio. The Dragonfly Test Platform delivers the industry's most effective combination of test quality of results, ease-of-adoption, and test cost reductions specifically targeted for 65nm and 45nm system-on-chip (SoC) designs. Dragonfly also delivers new silicon diagnostics and characterization capabilities that accelerate yield ramps and enable same-day turnaround of silicon from the fab to known-good first sample shipments. The Dragonfly Test Platform will be showcased at the Design Automation Conference being held in Anaheim, California, June 9th through 12th.
"The IC market is under intense profit pressures, resulting in an increased emphasis on reducing all cost components. Reduction in cost per function is driving higher gate density, driving the growth of 65nm and 45nm design starts," said James T. Healy, President and CEO of LogicVision. "The new Dragonfly Test Platform will provide our customers with the key test, silicon bring-up and yield-ramp capabilities they need to meet rapidly increasing cost, quality, and schedule pressures."

Coverity in Codefast Acquisition
Coverity(TM), Inc., a vendor of solutions for improving software quality and security in C/C++ and Java, today announced the acquisition of Codefast. Coverity's first acquisition provides the company with engineering talent and advanced technology from Codefast to help developers understand and accelerate the software build process. The product acquired from Codefast will be enhanced to take advantage of Coverity's patented Software DNA Map(TM) analysis system, further expanding the company's platform of products that enable software development teams to ensure the integrity of their code. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
"Many development organizations today struggle with build management and build optimization, leaving a significant opportunity for innovation from Application Lifecycle Management vendors," said Theresa Lanowitz, founder of Voke, a technology analyst firm. "This is an excellent acquisition for Coverity. It gives the company a strong product offering in an emerging ALM segment that is a natural complement to Coverity's existing strengths in static and dynamic analysis."
In February 2008, Coverity accepted its first round of outside funding following 5 consecutive years of cash flow positive growth during which time the company was successfully bootstrapped by product sales. The $22 Million round from Foundation Capital and Benchmark Capital was accepted to accelerate Coverity's sales and marketing reach, and to expand its product portfolio through acquisition and accelerated internal research and development efforts. The purchase of Codefast is Coverity's first acquisition.
"We dedicated the last 10 years at Codefast developing sophisticated execution engines to enable both incremental and parallel builds. Coverity's Software DNA Map analysis system is the missing piece that will unlock the power of Codefast's technology and open exciting new build efficiencies for developers," said Tom Schultz, former CTO of Code Fast, who is now a Director in the Office of the CTO at Coverity. "The Codefast team is pleased to bring our technology and expertise to Coverity, and we look forward to fundamentally improving the way software is built."
Coverity's experience with over 450 static and dynamic analysis customers was critical in the company's decision to purchase Codefast. Based on customer research, large development teams have an appetite for new tools that can accommodate a variety of build methodologies while improving their overall build processes.
"Build processes today are frequently inconsistent, leading to unpredictable results or costly delays that drag down development teams," said Seth Hallem, CEO of Coverity. "When combined with our existing static and dynamic analysis products, the addition of Codefast will enable Coverity products to span the coding, testing, building, and integration phases of software development, where many development organizations face considerable challenges."

Lightwave Test Results
Lightwave Logic, Inc., (BULLETIN BOARD: LWLG) (http://www.lightwavelogic.com/), a technology company focused on the development of electro-optic polymer materials for applications in high-speed fiber-optic telecommunications and optical computing, announced today an update on its current testing results.
The testing of the company's material is complex and requires numerous independent measurements necessary for commercialization. These initial tests may be divided into three general categories, including: Solubility (or Material Integration), Stability and Performance (or r33). Although all tests are not yet complete, results in the first two testing categories suggest that the company's material is well-suited for commercialization. Although performance (r33) testing has not yet been re-confirmed, previous test results indicated a 700% improvement over competitive technologies.
Lightwave Logic's Chief Technical Officer, David Eaton, explains, "Although the process has been delayed presumably due to end of year class scheduling, our preliminary results have been extremely positive, and we expect to produce our initial prototype devices in the short-term."
Two years ago the performance (r33) measurements from this material proved to be seven times the performance of the next highest performing competitive material. The company must, however, repeat r33 measurements to complete the proper testing protocol. The company will publish these results as soon as they become available. After completion of all testing and receipt of successful test results, Photon-X will begin fabrication of our initial prototype fiber-optic modulator.
Due to the time of year and university scheduling conflicts, the company has decided to have the final r33 testing conducted by Dr. C.C. Teng (co-inventor of the testing procedure), after which the University of Arizona will be used to confirm the results and complete additional tests to be used in a commercial device. Photon-X, our partner who has been very cooperative in this process, will also aid in the testing.

Advantest Mixed-Signal Test
Advantest Corporation , the world's leading supplier of semiconductor test equipment, today announced availability of its new T7723 mixed-signal test system. Ideally suited for the growing high-density automotive device market, the system's high-throughput and highly-parallel test capabilities afford customers significant reductions in test times. The T7723 mixed-signal test system will be available from June 2008 and will also be on display at the "Advantest Tour de Force 2008" exhibition to be held at the Tokyo International Forum, June 3-5.
Increasing Demand for High-Density Automotive Devices
The proliferation of battery powered systems, along with the increasing role of electronics in automobiles, are driving the growth of more complex, next-generation analog devices that offer more advanced functions, greater accuracy, and higher power. With an emphasis on vehicles built for safety, comfort and reduced impact on the environment, today's automobile manufacturers are relying heavily on the use of computerized control systems, and increasing numbers of electronic control units (ECUs) are being installed on board. ECUs incorporate a variety of semiconductors, including controller chips and power devices, and are requiring the number of chips in each vehicle to rise sharply. The market for these devices is predicted to reach 21 billion dollars by the year 2010, as demand for increasingly sophisticated automotive semiconductors escalates.
Yet despite the increased functionality and capabilities of these new devices, the market remains competitive and manufacturers are under continual pressure to reduce costs, particularly, the cost of test. http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.bold.gifAdvantest's T7723, answers this call by offering a cost-effective production test solution for these new, high-power, high-density, mixed-signal devices, The T7723's scalable architecture and an all-in-one test head capable of high-speed, high-accuracy and parallel testing of up to 32 devices, contribute to an improvement in throughput for mass production.
Supports full parallel test of multi-pin devices and reduces test time by 30%
The T7723 has double the test resources of its predecessor, owing to the incorporation of Advantest's newly-developed floating high-power DC in the system's DC test unit*(1). It also boasts a 30A high-voltage test capability -- 1.5 times greater than that of the company's earlier model. In addition, up to 64 relay circuits can be integrated within the test unit, enabling the system to direct and measure electrical current more efficiently, further enhancing its capabilities for multi-pin device test. With these new mechanisms, the T7723 can perform simultaneous test of high-density, high-voltage devices that incorporate BCD process technology*(2) used in power management in vehicles, resulting in a reduction in test time of up to 30%.
Expanded Performance Board Mount Space Facilitates Parallelism
As semiconductor reliability in automotive applications is critical, it is essential that testing be carried out in real life environments. As such, customers load the performance board of the test head with peripheral circuitry as well as the devices under test. In comparison with the previous model, the T7723 offers 1.8 times more space for loading these peripheral circuits. In addition, the relays that were formerly attached to the performance board are now housed within the tester itself, in the floating high-power DC unit. Such features ensure that the area of the test head devoted to device test is maximized, enabling enhanced levels of parallelism and thus a significant reduction in the cost of test.

ONYX Graphics Certification
ONYX Graphics Inc., a leader in wide format digital printing solutions, today announced that ONYX(R) workflow software products can be used to produce press proof output that complies with G7(R) Certification Level 1 standards. G7 is a proof-to-print process based on a set of color criteria developed to ensure digital print technology elements -- RIP, printer, media and ink -- can reproduce a typical offset lithography sheet. Certification ensures users can confidently use digital press proofs with the assurance of matching Standard Web Offset Printing (SWOP(R)) criteria.
The certification was awarded to ONYX ProductionHouse(TM) software driving the Epson Stylus(R) Pro 11880 printer with Epson(R) Premium Luster Photo Paper 260g and Epson Ultrachrome(R) Ink. The certification standards measure color reproduction through the use of International Color Consortium(R) (ICC) color matching profiles for primary and secondary colors and specific grey values. The ICC profile created in ONYX Profile Generator -- a key element available only in ONYX ProductionHouse software -- exceeded all testing standards and achieved a certification category of GRACoL(R) Grade 1, the highest available (to view a copy of the certificate detailing the measured values, visit http://www.onyxgfx.com/).
"This certification reinforces our proof-of-concept that ONYX Profile Generator is a high quality, extremely accurate tool for generating ICC profiles, giving users tremendous confidence that their output will be on-target," said Jon Reese, Director of Marketing for ONYX Graphics, Inc. "Given a similar starting point with paper white point values and ink gamuts, it's feasible that ONYX Profile Generator can create proof-worthy prints using other printer hardware and inks. Users don't have to spend thousands of dollars on a separate color management system when the capability already exists in ONYX ProductionHouse software."
Certification was awarded to this specific combination of ONYX workflow software and Epson hardware, ink and media. The ICC profile that earned certification can be used with any ONYX workflow software product including ONYX ProductionHouse, ONYX PosterShop(R), ONYX RipCenter(TM) and ONYX GamaPrint(TM) software. The ICC profile, as well as the printer driver with the profile, is available on request from ONYX Graphics.
The G7 process specifies a simple calibration method that helps printers reliably achieve a close "visual match" from proof to press. Consistent and accurate proofs can reduce costs, decrease turnaround times and eliminate re-makes of a print job. Commercial printers that employ G7 certified systems can develop internal guidelines for reliable process controls and assure print predictability before going on press. Print buyers can be assured of proof accuracy when working with a G7 certified supplier.

CACI Radio Contract Increased,
CACI International Inc (NYSE:CAI) announced today that the U.S. Army has awarded the company an additional ceiling of $97.9 million to support the Army Project Manager, Tactical Radio Communications Systems (PM TRCS). The competitively awarded increase now raises the potential value of the four-year PM TRCS contract to $189.6 million. CACI won the PM TRCS support effort under the Army's Strategic Services Sourcing (S3) contract vehicle in October 2006. This award represents both new business and the expansion of current tasks, and continues the growth of CACI's business in command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR).
The Army's tactical radio communications systems connect warfighters and first responders to each other and to military and government decision-makers. PM TRCS fields more than 150 such systems, providing airborne and ground-based radio communications in support of tactical operations that include battlefield engagements in Iraq.
CACI currently supports the manufacture and testing of systems to ensure specifications and schedules are met and costs are contained. The company also assists the PM TRCS in planning how systems are distributed and deployed, how related supplies are allocated, and how training is developed and scheduled to ensure the highest levels of warfighter readiness.
The new funding significantly expands CACI's existing PM TRCS work. The increase also reflects new business for CACI in support of additional communications. Here, CACI will help the Army use technologies to better sustain radio transmissions during battlefield operations. Where conventional radio signals may fail over difficult terrain or under harsh conditions, this form of communication provides greater success.

Micronas and Certicom
Certicom Corp. (TSX: CIC) today announced that Micronas (SWX Swiss Exchange: MASN), a supplier of application-specific IC system solutions for automotive and consumer electronics, has licensed Certicom's KeyInject(R) solution to secure the high-definition digital content protection (HDCP) cryptographic keys that are embedded into its silicon chips for use in consumer electronics.
HDCP is an industry-standard scheme designed to protect high-definition content during transmission from the source device to a display device, like an HDTV or projector. Cryptographic keys are used to encrypt the content and also authenticate the display device during this process, thereby preventing eavesdropping of high definition media and mid-transmission attacks.
Under HDCP licensing agreements, manufacturers can face substantial fines in the form of liquidated damages if just one key is lost during the manufacturing and assembly process. Companies that do not use an automated system to send keys to outsourced contract factories are vulnerable to human errors that result in key loss or misuse and may trigger licensing violations and direct monetary loss.
To remedy this, semiconductor companies that manufacture devices for consumer electronics are seeking to use secure and automated solutions in their manufacturing process that will protect their licensed keys, even when those keys are outsourced to manufacturing sites globally. To ensure the security of its products, Micronas has chosen Certicom KeyInject to protect their highly valuable HDCP keys during the chip manufacturing process. Micronas needed a solution that not only controlled their keys but also ensured that key inventories are always available to their contract manufacturing plants.
"Knowing the potential penalties for mismanaged or dropped keys, conducting these processes manually is not an option," said Stefan Rossel, Director IT at Micronas. "Certicom's solution is not only ideal as an automated process, but also as a trusted and proven source of dependable security and key management operations."
Certicom's KeyInject system also provides a key management and audit trail so that companies can account for the keys used during manufacturing and also monitor them to detect any irregular usage.
"Using our KeyInject system, Micronas is able to deliver their chip solutions for consumer electronics like high-definition TVs to market much faster," said Brian Neill, Certicom product manager. "Having a major international customer like Micronas validates the importance of using an automated key injection system from a trusted cryptography supplier, especially given the realities of today's world of globally outsourced manufacturing."

Coverity Thread Analyzer
Coverity(TM), Inc., the leader in automatically improving software quality and security in C/C++ and Java, today announced the release of Coverity Thread Analyzer for Java. The product is the first dynamic analysis tool for multi-threaded applications that automatically detects concurrency defects that can cause data corruption and application failures. Coverity Thread Analyzer can also be used in concert with Coverity Prevent, the industry-leading static analysis tool, to create a powerful software quality solution that will help developers control the complexity of writing multi-threaded applications.
"The continued growth of multi-core processors has forced development teams to begin creating multi-threaded applications whether they are ready or not," said Michael Monticello, security and risk analyst at Enterprise Management Associates. "To successfully eliminate the concurrency defects inherent to multi-threaded applications, organizations need sophisticated new tools that pinpoint these hard-to-find issues so developers can focus on bringing secure and reliable new products to market."
Coverity Thread Analyzer for Java observes code as it is executed and automatically and predictably identifies race conditions and deadlocks. The product is unique in the field of dynamic analysis because it detects not only problems that will occur in limited testing environments, but also problems that have the potential to occur over extended operations in field environments.
This distinction is particularly important for multi-threaded applications that, due to their complexity, may run without failure for extremely long periods of time before a "perfect storm" of system events triggers a concurrency defect. For example, the North American blackout of 2003 was due to a race condition that occurred after 3 million hours of consecutive system operation.
"We just evaluated Coverity Thread Analyzer on one of our equity trading applications. We were impressed with Thread Analyzer's ability to dynamically identify, with pin-point accuracy, complex concurrency issues in our Java code," said Hidekazu Sugiura, Director, Financial IT Division, Simplex Technology.
Coverity Thread Analyzer is also the first dynamic analysis solution that can reduce the risk inherent in migrating complex, single-threaded code bases to perform effectively in multi-core environments. The product accomplishes this by reporting thread-shared data to users, indicating locations where a locking discipline should be introduced. This allows developers to proactively identify existing and potential concurrency issues, so they can eliminate them before they cause failures in the field.
Coverity Thread Analyzer also combines with Coverity Prevent, the industry-leading static analysis tool to give Java developers a comprehensive analysis solution that offers unmatched capabilities to identify and eliminate concurrency and other critical code defects that can cause slowdowns, failures and crashes. These two Coverity products integrate static and dynamic analysis in a unique, complimentary manner by adopting the strengths of each technique to enhance the other. Specifically, the combined solution accelerates and lowers the overhead associated with dynamic analysis while further improving the accuracy of static analysis through the elimination of false positive results.
Unlike other dynamic analysis products that impose a memory and/or runtime overhead between 10x and 100x on the software systems they analyze, Coverity Thread Analyzer has a low 2x overhead for most programs, enabling the tool to be used in select production environments that include interactive applications and applications with strict timing requirements.
"As the demand for multi-threaded Java applications continues to accelerate, software developers are now faced with the pressure to deliver significantly more complex products, often on the same tight timelines as the single-threaded products that preceded them," said Ben Chelf, chief technology officer at Coverity. "Coverity Thread Analyzer and Coverity Prevent help developers create high quality multi-threaded applications by combining powerful technologies to help them eliminate concurrency defects that are nearly impossible to detect with conventional methods."
